History of BMC


Though it is named ‘Music College’, it is in actual fact a leading learning centre for performing arts where above and beyond music one can learn drawing, dance and various musical instruments.

The journey began on 10th August, 1940 with only eight students and six rupees at Murolidhar Girls’ School, then named Ballygunge Girls’ School at 4, Hindusthan Road. The money was spent in printing admission forms.

Sangeetacharya Nanigopal Bandopadhyay’s noble endeavour was facilitated by Dr. Snehamoy Dutta, Late Kshitish Chandra Bandopadhyay and renowned musicologist Manindra Chandra Chakraborty.

The journey began.

After traversing a 75 years long meandering pathway Bengal Music College is on its way to a glorious centenary. The eventful seven decades have seen myriad celebrated names like Suchitra Sen, Sumitra Sen, Purba Dam as students of this hallowed institution. The list of gurus included illustrious maestros like Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, Chinmoy Chattopadhyay, Purabi Dutta, Akhilbandhu Ghosh and others. Bengal Music College Society was formed in 1961 in accordance with College Registration Law. The college building was built on the land given by Calcutta Improvement Trust (CIT).
