The uniqueness of Bengal Music College lies in the fact that it was not only the first teaching centre for performing arts but was also the nucleus of assorted activities to expand and propagate cultural pursuits.

The Bengal Music College was established in the year 1940 by the selfless service of the founder Principal Late Nanigopal Bandyopadhyay and valuable services of Late Manindra Chandra Chakraborty and Late Kshitish Chandra Bandyopadhyay.

In 1956, Bengal Music College came to be affiliated to Calcutta University. Two separate but interconnected Departments evolved- one offering Degree courses and the other Diploma courses to the students.

In 1961, Bengal Music College was registered under the Societies Registration Act,1860 and Bengal Music College Society was formed. Both the Departments of the College were governed by the managing committee of the society.

The Management of the Department offering Degree Courses was however taken over by the Calcutta University in the year 1978.

At present the Bengal Music College continues to offer Diploma Courses on a varied field of performing Arts.

Presently there are 85 accredited centres of this college which are located in different parts of the country like Delhi, Silchar, Shantiniketan, Jhargram etc with a total student strength of more than 10,000.

Our intent is to spread the ancient tradition of music. Promoting the rich heritage of our roots and helping it to broaden its horizon is our primary objective. Our commitment is towards our venerable culture and so we espouse “Folk, Not Fake”. We are uncompromising in our effort to protect the purity of our cultural legacy. Our philosophy is originality while applying in modern form.
